When did we open our manufacturing facility and head office?

Founded as a family business, ROCKWOOL has a history of responsible environmental practices, developing community partnerships, and investing in the communities in which we operate globally. Our first production facility in North America – located in Milton, Ontario is an example of just that.

Having opened in September of 1988 and now in operation for more than 35 years, we are a proud neighbour and continue to partner with the community by investing in sustainable operations and getting actively involved in local programs and causes that support the wellbeing and prosperity of local residents.

The 750,000-square-foot manufacturing plant is located on Steeles Avenue. The facility was purchased as a brownfield site from Lafarge Canada, brownfield meaning that the land was previously used for industrial purposes.

In 2008 we expanded the Milton site, increasing production capacity and creating 100 additional local jobs, before finalizing construction of our corporate headquarters for the region in December of 2014 located on Esquesing Line.

How does our factory operate?

Our manufacturing facilities are an example of advanced and sustainable operations. In Milton, we continue to look for opportunities to reduce energy consumption and have done so through investments in new technologies such as lighting retrofits, conducting regular internal audits to identify areas for improvement, and participation in Milton’s Hydro Voluntary Transitional Demand Response Program to scale back energy usage during peak times.

The Milton manufacturing facility produces our insulation products for residential, commercial, and roofing applications, as well as our full line of Grodan horticultural solutions. Producing our products in the most environmentally-responsible manner is a commitment we take very seriously at ROCKWOOL. In fact, as a company, we are holding ourselves accountable against commitments to several of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Milton facility is working diligently to reduce CO₂ emissions, improve water and energy efficiencies, and minimize waste to landfill.

How’s our progress? Well today we can say that our Milton plant operates with  minimized waste to landfill, uses heat recovery systems that capture heat from the production process to heat the building, has on-site recycling to transform production waste into usable raw materials, and just as is the case with all our facilities worldwide, our production process is designed for zero wastewater discharge to the environment.

How are we positively impacting the community?

We take great pride in making a significant and positive impact in the communities we are part of. In Milton, we’re supporting infrastructure and programs through partnerships with organizations including the Milton Chamber of Commerce, the United Way, Halton Food for Thought, the Halton Learning Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and local events including the Downtown Milton Street Festival.

When the ROCKWOOL Milton, Ontario production facility initially opened, there were approximately 75 employees. Today, there are more than 270 salaried and hourly workers helping to drive production of stone wool products made from stone – one of the earth’s most abundant natural resources – and engineered into solutions for insulation and horticultural applications that help to address energy-efficiency, urbanization, and climate change.

Our corporate office employs approximately 130 team members working in areas ranging from marketing and business development, to finance, supply chain, IT, customer service, communications and public affairs, sales, technical support, and human resources.
